The Significance of Science to Save the Environment of Our Planet


Now the world has reached a critical time where people are suffering from a contagious deadly virus called COVID-19 for over 2 years. At the same time, people are dealing with political corruption and international war-like situation. The economy of almost all nations has already started breaking down. The rate of poverty and hunger is also increasing. Natural, political, and social impacts are causing immense human migration.


Simultaneously natural calamities all across the globe are adding fuel to the suffering of human beings. Now it is a shocking truth for humans that almost all of these disasters are happening just because of their insensitive actions.




Due to the burning of fossil fuels by humans the average global temperature is rising very quickly. The emission of greenhouse gases and air pollutants are the negative impacts of the utilitarian urban lifestyle of people that result in global warming and climate change. The advancement of science has improved the lifestyle of people but failed to save the environment.


Science has done a lot of harm to the climate of our planet. Now we should again use science to remove the adverse effects of science. In COP21 (a meeting held in December 2021 in Paris) the necessity to protect the climate of the earth has become clear and relevant. The meeting confirmed the significance of combating the climate crisis with the help of scientific methods and technologies.

For example, by using biotechnology, improved climate change-resistant crops can be produced. Production of golden rice enriched with vitamin A, different varieties of flood-resisting rice, and drought-tolerant cereal can be done to adapt to climate change. The utilization of biofuels and the manufacture of electric cars and other ‘green cars’ can also play a remarkable role to save the planet by consuming fewer fossil fuels and oil than conventional vehicles.


Scientific inventions have brought renewable energy that includes sustainable sources of energy such as solar power, hydropower, wind power, geothermal power, biofuels, etc. All these renewable sources of energy can be used as alternatives to fossil fuels. But unlike fossil fuels, they emit no harmful greenhouse gases while generating electric power.


Innovation of new materials such as biomaterials can be used to store carbon dioxide. Biomaterials can help to minimize the greenhouse effect and reduce climate risks.


In Mexico innovation of banana blades (that are used for construction purposes) helps in eliminating toxic compounds like asbestos which is often blamed to increase the risks of severe diseases like cancer. The environment becomes polluted due to uncontrolled mining.


Science has proposed several new technologies to locate, extract, and process minerals. For these new technologies now, miners need not dig huge pits for mining a few minerals. Land reclamation technologies have also been developed a lot through science. These technologies help in recovering derelict land that is damaged by mining activities.




We all know that due to the detrimental effects of global warming polar ice caps are now increasingly melting. Over the last 30 years at the Arctic sea, the rate of ice loss has become almost 13% every ten years. Scientists often go to Polar Regions to study different life forms of bacteria. Their study helps them to comprehend how life on earth started to evolve.


But climate change was hampering their research. This led the leading scientists to seek solutions to prevent ice from melting. Now for the sake of their studies, they have conserved many polar areas. To a certain extent, conservation of Polar Regions and protection of the polar lives by them have saved the environment of our planet. Scientific technologies like aerial seeding have been proved beneficial for the restoration of forests.


Thus, science has much potential to show us hope in the midst of environmental crises. Everyday science is evolving its efficiency and scientists are trying hard to invent new sustainable technologies so that our planet remains green and habitable in the coming centuries.
