Zero-Carbon Transportation: The Only Practical Way Ahead

carbon footprint

Transportation is one of the major causes of pollution and global warming in today’s world. Vehicles like motor cars, buses, trucks, trains, etc. emit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases which is the reason for the surging climate crisis. Emission of air pollutants like hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, etc. leads to severe pollution and health problems. Net-zero carbon emission is the atmospheric state that should protect us from these types of health hazards and keep our environment clean.

The road transport sector mostly relies on petroleum and diesel-based fuels like petrol, natural gas, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), diesel, etc. With the growth of population, the number of vehicles has increased a lot. The level of pollution and harmful greenhouse gas emissions also have increased on a large scale. To get rid of vehicle pollution and other transport-related environmental crises and health issues it is high time to adopt zero-carbon transportation.

What an electric vehicle can do?

Zero-carbon transportation is one of the best ways to reduce the carbon footprint of a country. Sustainable transportation with electric vehicles plays an important role in reducing carbon emissions. Several researchers have proved that an electric vehicle is a better option than petrol or diesel cars. These vehicles emit fewer air pollutants, carbon dioxide, and other greenhouse gases. As electric cars can efficiently minimize the greenhouse effect and air pollution they make the streets cleaner and better places for pedestrians. Electric vehicles are quieter than conventional vehicles. So they can also reduce noise pollution.

Electric vehicles are vehicles that use electric motors for their propulsion. Electric vehicles are powered by electricity or battery. Batteries are charged by generators, fuel cells, or solar panels. Electric vehicles include electric or solar-powered aircraft and spacecraft, rail vehicles, water vessels, etc. Some other examples of electric vehicles are E-Bike, electric scooter, battery-electric bus, electric tram, electric trolleybus, and electric truck. Electric locomotives are used in the Shatabdi Express trains in India.

The rising price of petroleum-based fuels and an attempt to adopt green alternatives have led many individuals as well as organizations to lean towards electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are nowadays necessary for sustainable transportation. Even when electric vehicles are powered by coal or other fossil fuels they contribute lower emissions than conventional vehicles. A passenger vehicle powered by gasoline produces almost 5-6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. It is observed that nearly 20% of carbon emissions can be decreased with the utilization of electric cars.

Though it is not easy to make our country carbon-neutral, electric cars can definitely help us to achieve a zero-carbon transportation system. Some state authorities call for all new vehicles to be sold after the year 2035 to be electric. If we can replace half of the school buses and public buses with clean electric buses it will help millions of people to come out of the risk of cancer, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases. Government should increase financial support and technical assistance for vehicles operators to go electric.

Several travelling options to reduce your carbon footprint

carbon footprint

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles you should use more public transportation instead of travelling by your private cars. If your commute is about 20 miles round trip, switching to public transportation could decrease your carbon footprint by 4800 pounds per year. One research showed that the American households that are responsible for the production of the least amount of emissions live near a bus route or train line. The people who live in those houses annually drive almost 4400 fewer miles than the people who have no access to public transport.

If you travel by air you should avoid connecting flights. Jet fuels emit a lot of greenhouse gases. Landing and take-off are the most fuel-intensive parts of the flights. The more connections a flight makes, the higher the carbon footprint it will produce. So to reduce the environmental impact of your journey while booking your ticket you should choose direct flights. Heavier aircraft consume more fuels. A large portion of the weight of an aircraft is constituted by cargo and baggage. To make a difference in the flight’s fuel consumption you should try to reduce the weight of your luggage. To minimize your carbon emissions try to travel to the airport by train, bus, or other public transit modes.

Walking and bicycling are considered recreational activities. These man-powered locomotion need no oil or fossil fuel. Walking or cycling not only reduces traffic congestion but also helps to limit greenhouse gas emissions. These environmentally friendly travelling methods do not create noise and do not destroy wetlands, open parking spaces, and animal habitats. They also decrease our demand for motorized transport. One estimation shows that if around 45% of our journeys under 6 kilometers (which takes less than thirty minutes to cycle) were completed by walking or bicycling instead of driving, transport-related emission would decrease by 0.12 million tonnes per year.

To make a big change, every country should come forward to build eco-friendly vehicle infrastructure and promote climate-friendly development. Government should encourage all organizations to calculate their carbon footprint. Several awareness camps should be organized to make people aware of their roles to achieve the goal of zero-carbon transportation.
